Description:
Lumiar School opened in 2003 by Lumiar Institute, in downtown São Paulo, is now with 66 2-14 year old students and will keep growing until it reaches the high school. To ensure a cultural socio-economically diverse student body, a majority of the students receive scholarships in amounts ranging from 25% to nearly 100% of the tuition. At Lumiar, the adults play two different roles, as “tutors” and “masters”.  Tutors are full-time members of the school community, each of whom is responsible for overseeing and assisting in the development of a small group of children.  Masters are members of the local community with particular skills, knowledge, or passion for a certain field, who comes to the school several hours a week to develop projects with students, who are free to participate in as few or as many projects as they wish.  All decisions affecting the school community, both big and small, are subject to deliberation and decision by one of a number of Committees, on which both adults and children sit on a rotating basis, or during the School Assembly, in which all members of the community participate.
