Description:
The Beach School (TBS) is a not-for-profit,
independent school for children aged 4-19
located in Toronto, Canada since 2003 that is
part of an educational tradition of democratic
decision-making and self-initiated learning. TBS
is modeled in particular after Sudbury Valley
School, which has been operational in
Framingham, Massachusetts since 1968 and has
inspired schools around the world. TBS believes
in:
Independence: Students plan their own activities
(traditionally academic or not) rather than
attending preset classes thus allowing students
the space to discover their own interests and
pursue their own passions.
Equality: All members of the school community
(staff and students) participate equally in the
day-to-day decisions of the school by making and
enforcing its rules and procedures.
Responsibility: Students are made responsible
towards themselves and others by being given
empowerment over their lives and staff members
serve not as supervisors of the students, but as
role models for life-long learning and
responsible adult behavior.
Diversity: Students are not grouped by age, so
they are free to interact with and learn from
everyone in the school community. Students learn
to appreciate the variety of experiences and
viewpoints which enrich our society, and to
confidently find their own places within it.
Community: TBS is part of a larger community
encompassing students, staff, families,
neighbors, and ultimately, the world. The school
is not a haven which shelters students from
society, but is rather a safe place from which
to explore the resources and negotiate the
challenges of the world at large.
