Description:
The "Ting" School is based on the principles of
student-centred, free democratic education.
Enjoying lifelong learning, exploring ones own
fields of interest, taking on responsibility for
one self and others as a member of a democratic
community and taking part in democratic
processes is vital. The students are trusted
with taking on these tasks and fulfilling them.
Learning is an active process, taking place
particularly when it is initiated by the learner
himself, striving to be able to understand the
natural an social world around him and to act
within it. Asking questions, methodically
searching for answers, setting and achieving
ones own goals are the central elements of
learning at Ting School.
Learning something new is often hard work. The
experience of other free democratic schools
shows that students are even more willing to
take on this hard work if they have the freedom
to learn problem-orientedly, to pursue their own
fields of interest, and to deepen their
knowledge of them. Therefore Ting School
students are free to choose their fields and
ways of learning. It is the staff members’ job
to accompany and to assist the students on their
ways of learning, helping them to create an
atmosphere ideal for learning processes.
Developing personalities is enhanced by learning
in mixed age groups. Children learn from older
students, and older students learn to share
their knowledge with others. Giving students the
opportunity to learn in mixed age groups also
enables them to learn with students of similar
knowledge and skills rather than of similar age.
Therefore learning processes at Ting School take
place in age mixed groups.
From the very beginning Ting School students
learn to participate in the school’s democratic
organisation. All matters of daily school life
are decided democratically in the weekly school
meeting. This covers budget decisions as well as
school rules, which shall guarantee untroubled
school life and a learning atmosphere free of
disturbances.
Democratic schools offer an environment for
children and teenagers to shoulder
responsibility, mainly for their own learning
processes. At the same time they learn how to
deal with the consequences of their choices for
themselves and others. Values such as respect,
cooperation and tolerance are an inevitable
component of daily school life.
