Description:
The Northeast Association of Independent Democratic Schools, Inc. (NAIDS) is an accrediting organization formed to recognize and promote independent schools throughout the region that are practicing democratic education.

The association is interested in expanding the membership to include all the schools in the Northeast region which practice democratic education. The current criterion for membership is for the current member schools of the association to recommend admission.

For the purposes of this association, we started working toward a consensus for a definition of democratic education. So far we agreed that as a minimum a democratic school should offer a curriculum that is non-coercive, determined and directed by each student, and a decision-making process that allows students real power over the structures of the school.
There is no cost to join the association. Members can use the corporate seal of the association on certificates of graduation and official documents. Schools that practice Waldorf and Montessori methods have long had the benefits of a professional association. We hope that the democratic education movement will similarly benefit from the “strength in numbers” that comes with increased name recognition and communication.

We hope you will consider joining this association by contacting us. The democratic education movement is growing and to help to sustain this growth for the long term we need to band together and present a more integrated face to the communities we serve.
